Volunteer
Have you spent your life in suburbia or the city feeling a complete disconnect to your food sources? Do you look at a burrito and wonder, "where did these ingredients come from and who grew them?" If so, perhaps it's time for you, my friend, to find out.

In exchange for a day's work, we will feed and shelter you. We even have a big closet full of work clothes so that your nice city clothes don't get soiled. We live across the road from a river which serves as our wallow in the hot summer afternoons. All we ask is that you are self-motivated, eager to learn how to grow and eat good food, and can get along relatively well in big groups of people.
The job board gets filled every week and all are expected to contribute to the cooking and cleaning. We will happily pair you up with a seasoned cook so that you can learn where everything is and new ways of cooking from scratch.
We try to have weekly meetings so that lines of communication stay open. One of our residents acts as volunteer coordinator, however any resident will be happy to help answer questions, assign farm tasks, and resolve any issues you may have.
We also try to accommodate special dietary requests but if you come with allergies to just about everything, it may be too much for us to take on.
One day off a week is the norm. If you don't make yourself scarce, you may get roped into whatever farm task needs to be completed. Thankfully, our area of British Columbia is rich with beautiful hikes, canoeing, and day trips. Greyhound can take you all over. Just ask and we'll point you in the right direction.

In 2009, the BC Food Systems Network (BCFSN) gave birth to the Shuswap Regional Food Network (SRFN). The goal of our regional network is to enable communication through our list-serve as well as through community pot lucks and events. If this sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, if only to share your thoughts, click here to sign up. "Let's Talk Local Food and Local Solutions" was the theme of last year's gathering. See the TRU article for more information.
